As the Gyeonggi Line railroad opened in 1908 and the district office relocated to Ilsan, Ilsan Market developed around the Ilsan Intersection (taxi stop). While the market was experiencing growth and prosperity as the heart of Goyang and Paju's commercial districts, the crowding that resulted from its narrow layout necessitated the reclamation of nearby rice fields in 1956. The third and eighth days of every month became market days, and a cattle market was even established as a result of its success. In 1979, in accordance with a traditional market modernization plan, individual wooden buildings were replaced with a reinforced concrete complex, where the market moved in 1983 and continues to stand the test of time. There are about 130 stores open year round, 90 of which are located in the eight buildings (totaling about 5,200㎡) and another 40 located in its proximity. Currently, Ilsan Market has cultural significance as a traditional fifth-day market in the heart of the city, surpassing its original function as a marketplace for buying and selling goods.
Wondang Traditional Market was established in 1980 and officially registered as a traditional market on July 13, 2005. As a result of the 2007 installation of an arcade as part of the traditional market facility modernization project, you can enjoy shopping in a more pleasant environment; however, the lack of parking makes it somewhat inconvenient to use. Since June 1, 2013, Wondang Traditional Market has operated a free delivery center in an effort to address this issue and increase customer convenience. It is a service that delivers purchased items anywhere in Goyang upon request. The price is low compared to large supermarkets, and discounts are offered twice per month. The market is always bustling, with over 1,000 visitors per day.
